On May 19, 2020, Cape Memory Care was informed that a staff member tested positive for COVID-19. The staff member who tested positive had passed the pre-shift medical screening prior to their last shift and was showing no symptoms the last time they worked in the community.

Immediately, as per our COVID-19 protocols already in place to mitigate resident and staff risk, Cape Memory Care arranged universal testing for all residents and staff members at our community. Those tests were completed on May 20. Test results arrived on the afternoon of May 21 and identified 45 Cape Memory Care residents and 12 staff members as positive for COVID-19. Employees who test positive will not return to work until fully recovered and cleared by medical personnel.

We know that you are concerned and will have questions. Amanda Allen, Cape Memory Care Administrator, and her team will continue to provide updates on a regular basis. If you need to speak to Amanda directly, please don’t hesitate to call her at (207) 553-9616. Please know, due to an increased volume in calls, we are doing our best to answer or return all correspondence as quickly as possible.

Resident safety is our absolute top priority. We have implemented our COVID-19 response plan and are working directly with a dedicated team of professionals at Maine CDC. We are fortunate to have a devoted group of staff from multiple communities throughout Maine who have volunteered to work at Cape Memory Care until the need passes.

We will continue to screen all staff for COVID-19 related symptoms and be diligent in our observation and care of the residents we serve. We are doing everything possible to provide exceptional care and comfort to those who are experiencing symptoms, and those who are nervous about what this means for their own health.

Some residents who tested positive are currently out of the community receiving care in other healthcare settings. Residents who tested positive for COVID-19 that remain at Cape Memory Care are being relocated to a designated section of the community to most effectively isolate them from non-positive residents, while maintaining memory care best practices.

This is an unusually difficult situation for all involved. We at Cape Memory Care appreciate your overwhelming support and understanding as we continue to be highly attentive to the new and unprecedented needs of the residents we serve.
